Support first
Ceiling Fan Installation
A ceiling fan is only as sound as the box and the framing above it. M.W. WEBS Electrica hangs a fan after that support is confirmed. A light-only box is not treated as good enough.
Who this is for
People replacing a light with a fan, swapping an aging fan, or adding a fan in a room that already has a suitable ceiling box. Vaulted ceilings, very heavy fans, and outdoor damp-rated units need extra detail in the request.
Typical reasons
- A bedroom that needs air movement without opening windows
- A living room light that will become a fan with a light kit
- A wobbling fan that may be a support problem, not just a blade issue
What the review includes
Ceiling height, box listing, joist layout if it can be seen, and the existing switch. Some rooms need a new fan-rated brace. Some already have one. That difference is the main cost fork.
Bring the fan’s weight and diameter. If the unit is already in the house, leave it in the box until the support is checked.
Process, cost, and limits
Installation includes mounting, wiring to the existing switch if it is suitable, and a balance check. Remote kits, new switch loops, and brace replacements are scoped when they appear. Sloped-ceiling adapters are not assumed.
Prepare a clear floor, the fan hardware, and word on whether you want a single switch or separate fan and light control.
Ceiling fan FAQ
Can you hang a fan on a standard light box?
Not if that box is not fan-rated. The support is changed first, or the job does not proceed.
Do you supply the fan?
Only if that is written into the scope. Many clients supply their own listed fan.
What about a fan on a vaulted ceiling?
Those need a downrod and a box that matches the angle. Send photos of the ceiling peak.
Is balancing included?
A basic check is part of hanging the fan. Persistent wobble can come from a blade or a ceiling that still needs a better brace.
